This online CPD course has been designed to provide easy access to up-to-date scientific information on pneumonic mannheimiosis and pneumonic pasteurellosis particularly in feedlot cattle. The course has been developed by internationally recognized scientists on feedlot-associated infections/diseases, Prof Anthony Confer (Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma, USA) and Prof Jared Taylor (Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma, USA).
In this course the differences in epidemiology, pathogenesis and pathology between pneumonic mannheimiosis caused by Mannheimia haemolytica and pneumonic pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida as well as the role of other factors including bacterial and viral infections, environmental conditions and management in the Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex are discussed. The pros and cons of different diagnostic techniques and available vaccines and therapeutics and the role of preweaning and preconditioning programmes in the control of the BRD complex are pointed out.
Veterinary, para-veterinary and allied animal and human health professionals and students.
Online CPD course
Pneumonic mannheimiosis and pneumonic pasteurellosis affect particularly recently weaned beef calves shortly after entry to feedlots or after long shipments of various kinds as a component of ‘shipping fever’ or undifferentiated bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Economic losses to the North American feedlot industry due to respiratory disease have been estimated to be as high as one billion dollars annually. In spite of continuing intensive research to develop efficacious vaccines and improved management programmes to prevent pneumonic mannheimiosis in feedlot cattle, success to date has been limited and control of bovine bacterial pneumonia still relies heavily on antibiotics as preventative measures and for treatment.
The learner will be able to study and complete the course material and online test at his/her own pace.
After completion of the course the learner will have a sound knowledge of pneumonic mannheimiosis and pneumonic pasteurellosis and will be able to:
Some of the modules will have a multiple-choice test, while others are read for information.
Module 2: Pneumonic mannheimiosis and pneumonic pasteurellosis

In order to qualify for CPD points, the learner will be required to complete the course and pass the multiple-choice test with 80%.
